Learning Log 38

Language Arts
Kimball finished the Just So Stories, so he read The Cat Who Walks by Himself, and finished how The Beginning of the Armadillos.  He copies 4 sentences from King Arthur and another stanza from Godfrey Gordon Gustof Gore. He also did "just fun" writing, and wrote some sentences. Peter read the 1st and 2nd books in the Percy Jackson series. He wrote a poem to me (his mom) for Mother's Day.  Elsie read the 2nd and 3rd books from the Percy Jackson Series.  Elsie wrote a note to her mom for Mother's Day.  She also did several pages of her cursive handwriting practice sheets.  Anna read 1 1/2 chapters from Days Go By.  She also copied a couple sentences from the magazine about bees we are going through. 

Math
Kimball finished chapter 5 and took the test, and started on chapter 6.  In chapter 5 he learned what parallel and perpendicular lines are.  In chapter 6 he learned how to divide by 9s.  He also reviewed subtraction with regrouping, and other division math facts he has learned so far. 
Peter finished chapter 8 for math, about the cartisian coordinate system, and finding the slope and intercept from an equation.  He reviewed solving for the unknown from equations.  He also took the test.  Elsie finished chapter 5 and took the test.  She also found her math test book, which had been lost, so she took several tests to catch up to where she was.  Anna worked on chapter 14 for math.  She reviewed previous math problems she had been working on, and worked on her addition facts that are 1 number away from doubles (7+8).  We also did some "bee" math together.  Anna learned how to draw a hexagon; Peter, Elsie, and Kimball learned how to find the area of a hexagon; and Peter did a large story problem and figured out how many and at what cost it would be to tile a certain area using hexagon tiles.  We learned new terms such as regular polygons and apothem.  Anna learned what a perimeter and area were.

Music
Kimball, Peter, Elsie, and Anna practiced their songs on the cello, viola, or violin, as well as the piano.  They also went to Bows and Bridges for their lessons.  They are working on songs for the recital in a couple weeks. 

Science
We went to the Rock and Gem show and signed up to be apart of our local Rock and Gem Club!  We had a great time looking at rocks, and the kids bought some quarts crystals which are in the shape of hexagons!  We learned what blue calcite is and watched how gems are shaped and manually formed.  Kimball bought a couple opals because they are his birthstone, and all the kids had fun collecting rocks from vendors who gave sweet donations.  It was a lot of fun!

History
We learned about some great men in Greek history.  We learned about the battle of Marathon and Pheidipedes' death, Pisistratus the Tyrant (and how he really wasn't much of a tyrant at all), and Lycurgus and Draco.  We also learned that Sir Edmund Hillary was a bee keeper, which is why he had the time to climb Mt Everest.  We learned about other famous people in history and how they contributed to "bee knowledge" or had bee hobbies,  such as Hippocrates, Thomas Jefferson, and Maria Von Trapp.
