Our first week back into school went well except that I forgot all about being accountable and turning in learning logs! Well, that's okay, we love looking back two weeks ago and figuring out what we did!? Alright, the kids have all been working really hard on their math. Anna hit a challenging chapter in her math, where she is learning to write to 100. At first she was completely overwhelmed. We spent the week taking it in chunks and looking for patterns to help her. Elsie worked on chapter 25, she is working on dividing 2 digit numbers into 5 digit numbers. She took the test as well. She did story problems and reviewed finding the area in parallelograms. She also reviewed symmetry, and finding examples. Kimball worked on chapter 21, where he learned about rounding to 10s, 100s, and 1000s, and how to estimate multiplication problems. He also reviewed his multiplication facts and addition and subtraction with regrouping. Peter finished chapter 25 and took the test, learning how to multiply "x" equations. He also reviewed some multiplication and geometry terms. He got a "Mary Poppins" on the test (practically perfect, just missing one)
For Language Arts Peter read about 100 pages in Magician's Nephew for his Pyramid Project class. He also wrote an outline for a story he plans to write. Kimball read outloud to me several times from Dinotopia, by Gurney. He reads about 15 minutes every day. He also read How Science Works to himself, about 5 pages. He also worked on studying his spelling words, and did a couple pages handwriting from his Jenny Phillips curriculum. Anna worked hard at getting back into her reading. She finished reading a chapter, The Big Wagon, out of her primer book, First Steps. We also started reviewing blends from her Delightful Reading curriculum, like the "ow", "ew", and "aw" sounds. She also was busy writing notes to her family. Elsie read Johnathan Livingston Seagull, and thought about how it applies to the characteristic, knowledge. She also worked on her cursive, and did 3 handwriting pages.
Our family started learning about constellations for science this week. We went over the big dipper and the little dipper and Auriga. We started our own little star constellation booklets on black paper. We draw the constellations with white pencils and then poke holes in the paper so we can see the constellations projected bigger. We also had a short star-gazing session and found the constellations in the sky.
For our tech courses, Peter scanned in and submitted all of his assignments he has done so far. He had to learn how to scan his drawings in, save, and upload them to canvas. The rest of us continued to work through the workbook, Starting and Growing my Business, and started chapter 2. We watched a video called "Why do People Buy?" and then talked about selling a product customers will want or need, and how to find that out. We were trying to think about customer needs.
For music, the kids started up on their music lessons at Bows and Bridges again. They had their violin, viola, or cello lesson and piano lesson also. They listened to their music and did their practicing in the prospective instruments. Peter started a new song in piano, The Happy Farmer, which he is excited about. Elsie finished book 1 in piano and started on Suzuki book 2, which she was happy about. they were all excited to be starting on new songs after their recital.
